 Wind Erosion Incentives

The Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) is working with the Federal Government through the Caring for our Country Program to combat wind erosion.in the Northern Agricultural region of WA.

West Midlands Group's Natural Resource Management Officer's administer the wind erosion incentives for the West Midland sub-region. The following incentives are available to land holders in the West Midlands region:

Perennial Pastures

Aim: To maximise the amount of ground cover on sites prone to wind erosion through landscape revegetation with perennial pasture species.

Qualifying land: Land that is under annual pasture or cropping systems and is in a single, minimum 20 ha block.

Site criteria:

  • A minimum site area of 20ha and maximum site area of 80 ha.
  • Land managers must already have livestock, or be prepared to incorporate this aspect into their farming system.

Target area indicators: Sites must be prone to wind erosion and within the NACC wind erosion target area for perennial pastures, and meet the relevant site assessment criteria.

Perennial Pastures Fact Sheet Activities and Incentive Rates

Fencing: $1,725/km for mesh fencing, $1,150/km for plain wire fencing or $575/km for electric fencing

Pasture establishment: $85/ha for the establishment of perennial pastures.

Watering point: $1,000/point – one point per 80ha. The site must be sub-divided for rotational grazing to be eligible for this incentive.

Industry membership: 12 months membership to Evergreen (if not received from NACC before)

Incentives for perennial pasture establishment are available up to a maximum of $10,600 per site.

 Criteria and minimum standards apply.

Fodder Shrub

Aim: To maximise the amount of ground cover on sites prone to wind erosion through landscape revegetation with fodder shrub species of tagasaste, rhagodia and salt bush.

Qualifying land: Land that is under annual pasture or cropping systems and is in a single block.

Target area indicators: Sites must be prone to wind erosion and within the NACC wind erosion and meet the relevant site assessment criteria.

Fodder Shrub Incentive Rates

Fencing: $2,000/km for mesh fencing, $1,000/km for plain wire fencing

Fodder shrub establishment: $0.20/seedling

Incentives for perennial pasture establishment are available up to a maximum of $8,000 per site.

 Criteria and minimum standards apply.

Strategic Revegetation

Aim: To place native and exotic revegetation species in strategic locations to minimise the potential for wind erosion across the NAR.

Qualifying land: The land must be essentially cleared ie currently under annual pasture or cropping OR on active soil erosion sites (blow outs) to stabilise sites.

Site criteria:

  • Minimum area of 5ha, with strategic revegetation configuration to the design criteria specified by NACC.
  • Erosion control sites have no minimum area, but fencing must occur around the outside of the eroded area.

Target area indicators: Sites prone to wind erosion and within the NACC wind erosion target area for strategic revegetation, and meet the relevant site assessment criteria.

Strategic Revegetation Fact Sheet Activities and Incentive Rates

Mesh fencing: Sites <5ha $2,300/km, sites 5-10 ha $2,875/km, sites >10ha $3,450/km

Plain wire fencing: Sites <5ha $1,150/km, sites 5-10 ha $1,325/km, sites >10ha $1,500/km

Revegetation: Sites <10ha $750/ha, sites >=10ha $1,000/ha

Weed control: $30/ha/year for 2 years (not for establishment activities)

Pest control (rabbits only): $20/km/year for 5 years, $40/warren (max 30 warrens) for warren ripping for one year, $20/warren (max 30 warrens) for Phostoxin treatment for one year.

Incentives for strategic revegetation establishment are available up to a maximum of $16,000 per site.

Criteria and minimum standards apply.

Tree Crops

Aim: To place tree crop plantations in strategic locations to minimise the potential for wind erosion, at a scale that will assist in attracting future development opportunities to the Northern Agricultural Region.

Qualifying land: The land must be essentially cleared ie currently under annual pasture or cropping.

Site criteria:

  • Minimum area of 5ha net for broombush.
  • Minimum of 10ha net plantable for oil mallees and sandalwood.

Target area indicators: Sites prone to wind erosion and within the NACC wind erosion target area.

Tree Crop Fact Sheet Activities and Incentive Rates

Tree crop establishment: $250/ ha
