Building WA beef supply chain

Location: WA

Project Start Date: July 2016

Project End Date: April 2019

Funding: sourced from the Department of Agriculture and Food WA and Royalties for Regions.

Project Aim: A partnership between Harvey Beef and WMG, endorsed by DAFWA and NBF, will facilitate the enablement of development of a robust backgrounding system for beef cattle in WA. The project partners will engage directly with producers to promote the business opportunity for them to participate in the cattle backgrounding sector, facilitate their entry into the sector and address any barriers to entry that producers identify.

In doing so, the project partners aim to give Harvey Beef and other interested processors and exporters of boxed beef, the confidence that the WA beef supply chain can provide a consistent, year round supply of export specification product. This project is critical to the expansion of the WA cattle industry. Its success will add significant value to pastoral cattle that are otherwise destined for live export markets, provide new employment opportunities in the on-farm and meat processing sectors, and most importantly, make a significant contribution towards the State Government’s initiative of doubling the value of the WA agri-food economy by 2025.
