Diagnostic protocols for soil compaction

Location: in the west midland’s area

Project Start Date: January 2015

Project End Date: December 2015

Project Aims: This project aims to improve the natural soil resource through better identification of zones of soil compaction and promotion of strategies to ameliorate these zones.
Ten to twelve selected/volunteer growers would be encouraged to opportunistically rip or deep cultivate strips across (or around) cropping paddocks prior to the 2015 growing season. Crop growth responses across the various production zones and soil types within paddocks will be monitored.

Interpreting the responses on the ripping/deep cultivation strips will be addressed using simulation modelling. There will also be a biological explanation of the responses and an economic interpretation of what those responses mean in dollar terms.
