History of Women, Wellbeing & Wine

Bronwyn Fox (nee Williams), West Midlands Group and Bev Blake, Landmark first conceived of the WWW idea in 2005. Bron and Bev felt that there were very few extension opportunities provided for women in the West Midlands region. The observation was made that there were many field walks and other agricultural based extension events- now, although these types of events are not exclusive to men, you can’t help getting the idea that men are clearly the target audience.

Bron and Bev decided to address this need by creating a full-day extension event that would appeal to West  Midlandswomen of all ages and that focussed not only on business and agriculture but also took into account the importance of wellbeing. The objective of the event was to provide a holistic day that focussed on the tangible aspects of life for regional women and the intangible values such as health, friendship and resilience….. Women, Wellbeing & Wine was born.

The first WWW event took place in September 2005 and was a roaring success with the formal forum part of the day being intertwined with a ‘market place’ offering and followed by delicious lunch (catered by Mary Shields) and, of course, wine.

As a result of member demand West Midlands Group brought back the event in 2009, developing a women's committee to manage the event. WWW is now one of West Midlands Group's key annual events, attracting women from all over the Mid-West and Wheatbelt to Dandaragan.

What happened in 2011

WWW, supported by principle sponsor CBH Group was hailed as a great success by the Countryman and Rural Press.  130 women enjoyed the day of extension and networking which was followed by a sumptuous buffet lunch catered for by Women's committee members, Di Brown and Christine Bean.

Participants were treated to an outstanding speaker line-up which included Centre for Food and Genomic Medicine research manager Dr Carolyn Williams.  Carolyn highlighted the threat of the looming diabesity (diabetes and obesity) epidemic, while outlining the benefits of lupin enriched foods.

RSM Bird Cameron director Judy Snell stressed the need for facilitation and possibly mediation to determine the needs of all concerned parties when it came time to formulate a farm succession plan.

A grant from the Shire of Dandaragan enabled West Midlands Group to bring anti-drugs campaigner and author Jade Lewis to Dandaragan.  A recovered heroin addict, Jane gave a graphic account of her involvement with drugs from the age of 15.  Jade has dedicated her life to campaigning against drugs and promoting self-esteem in schools, jails and the wider community.

Author and life coach Janette Philp also touched on the topic of self-esteem, explaining that fear often held people back from achieving their full potential.

2010 national Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) rural woman of the year Sue Middleton hosted a 'couch session' with the 2011 national RIRDC rural woman of the year Caroline Robinson from Mt Walker.  Caroline established the Wheatbelt Business Network and intends to put her bursary towards a 'buy local' campaign across the Wheatbelt.

12 local small businesses were involved in the 'market place' this year, with many women using the opportunity to treat themselves and a very organized few starting their Christmas shopping.

WMG ensured no one left empty handed with everyone adding a CBH Group WWW wine glass, sun flower seeds and a sweet potato to their bags and a lucky dozen winning a prize through a progressive raffle.

What happened in 2010

WWW 2010 was a great success with over 100 women from all over the West Midlands region enjoying a day of extension, networking, food and wine.

WWW 2010 offered participants the opportunity to experience presentations from a range of interesting speakers, peruse the interactive market place and enjoy an afternoon of networking over a gourmet lunch and glass of wine.

Keynote speaker Sabrina Hahn kept the audience entertained with stories from her projects in the far North, renowned WA artist, Jude Taylor inspired and brought a sense of beauty to the gathering. Rural men's health expert, Julian Krieg was a favorite with the mostly female audience whilst Maureen Dobra from the Loose Leaf Lettuce Company showed all how hard work and a little innovation can produce amazing results. And RSM Bird Cameron's Judy Snell spoke with great passion on how we can make better use and better savings with our Superannuation.

Morning Tea was catered for by local ladies in Fundraisers Dandaragan and the beautiful lunch was thanks to Badgingarra local Helle Rasmussen. Thanks must also go to teh Dandaragan Community Recreation Centre who once agian sponsored WWW by allowing the event to be run in the DCRC.

What happenned in 2009

94 women (and four men) converged on the Dandaragan Community Centre on Friday 3 April 2009. Co-MC’s Bronwyn Fox (WMG) and Brett Beard (Summit Fertilizers) welcomed everyone and introduced local Yued (Noongar) women, Maxine Gossland, who opened the day with a Welcome to Country.

Over the morning six diverse and talented speakers shared their thoughts and story’s of following their passion. Participants enjoyed presentations from: local lass Judy Snell; renowned horticulturalist, Bob Dixon from Kings Park; and women’s health professional Dr Delys Nicholas, before breaking for a delicious morning tea of lupin flour delicacies Kate Lamont(catered by the fantastic ladies from Fundraisers Dandaragan who donated monies raised to the Cancer Council for Australia's Biggest Moring Tea).

In the second session, experienced farmer and South Coast NRM Chairman, Alex Campbell presented , shedding light on the topic of carbon trading and bringing some perspective to climate change. Then Mingenew farmer James Yewers took to the stage to talk about his role as Chair of Irwin Valley Pty Ltd and the exciting prospects for the lupin flour product in the world market.

Keynote speaker Kate Lamont, did not disappoint- Kate talked candidly and passionately about her family, growing up in the Swan Valley and about the running of her expanding business, Lamont’s with her sister Fiona. Dotted with down-to-earth humour Kate’s speech was the perfect way to end the formal part of the day.

Women took the chance to catch up on a bit of shopping from the 13 local business stalls before heading over the Dandy Club for a delicious two-course lunch catered by local lady, Rebecca Matthews.
